The Romanian Association of the Blind is a non-governmental organisation recognized for public utility by the Government Decree number 1033/03.09.2008. Currently, it includes over 80,000 members and has 30 regional branches.

The Association  promotes the interests of the blind in relations with the authorities, attends to blind persons confronted with difficult circumstances, conducts a variety of activities, such as identifying visually impaired persons, referring blind children to specific schools, social investigations, provides support to visually-impaired students who are integrated in mainstream education.

The Association publishes 3 magazines: “Litera noastra”, the monthly Braille edition presents current information on the life and concerns of the blind, cultural information and practical advice to help them integrate into society at large; “Litera noastra”, the version for sighted readers, and a audio mp3 magazine called “Impact”.

RAB is a member of the EBU and the WBU and is also represented in the specialised commissions of the European Blind Union: the Commission for Social and Human Rights, the Commission for Education, the Commission for Access to Culture, Information and Leisure, the Commission on Rehabilitation, Vocational Training and Employment, as well as the Nomination Committee.
